Understanding Your Insurance

Our goal at Marlboro Park Hospital (MPH), is to ensure that your hospital bill is processed correctly and in a timely manner. The Business Office and Registration Department work together to gather information needed to process your claim accurately and timely.

Co-pays and deductibles are due at the time of service, and you will be asked by registration staff to pay these amounts at that time. In the event you are unable to pay the full amount we will refer you to our financial counselor who will be happy to assist you and answer any questions you have regarding your bill. We are happy to work with our patients and may request additional financial information from you to determine an appropriate payment plan.

I have Medicare. How do you bill Medicare and me?

If you are covered by Medicare, MPH will bill Medicare after you are discharged. You are responsible for paying your Medicare deductible and/or co-payment at the time of service. Medicare will send you a summary when they pay the hospital. This summary will show how much Medicare has paid to MPH. When the hospital has posted the Medicare payment, the hospital will send you a bill for any amount that remains due.

There are some charges Medicare may not pay. Self Administered Drugs are the responsibility of the patient. For more information, consult the Medicare Beneficiary Handbook

I have Medicare and Commercial Insurance. How is this billed?

If you have commercial insurance secondary to Medicare, MPH will bill Medicare following your discharge. Once Medicare has approved your claim for payment, they will send you a summary showing the amount they have paid to the hospital. When MPH posts the Medicare payment, the hospital will bill your secondary insurance company. You will receive a letter informing you that your secondary insurance has been billed. When your secondary insurance has paid and the hospital has posted the payment to your account, a statement will be mailed to you for any remaining balance due. If you are unable to pay the balance in full you will need to contact the hospital to place the balance on a payment plan.

I have Medicare and Medicaid. How are my bills processed?

If Medicaid is secondary to Medicare MPH will bill Medicare following your discharge or after your service has been rendered. Medicare will send you a summary notice when they pay MPH. The summary notice will show how much Medicare has paid the hospital. When the hospital posts the Medicare payment, MPH will bill Medicaid for the balance due. When your Medicaid has paid and the hospital posts the payment to your account, a statement will be mailed to you for any remaining balance due. Depending on the service(s) you receive, you could be required to pay a deductible and/or co-pay if not previously paid at the time of service.

When Medicaid is secondary to Medicare any non-covered charges as determined by Medicare, will also not be paid by Medicaid. Self Administered Drugs are non-covered by Medicare and these charges will be due from the patient.

I have commercial insurance. How are my bills processed?

Co-pays and deductibles are due at the time of service. If you are covered by commercial insurance, MPH will bill your commercial insurance company following your discharge or procedure. You will be sent a letter stating that MPH has billed your insurance company.

Your commercial insurance will send you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) summarizing the payment. After posting the commercial insurance payment, MPH will send your claim to your secondary insurance company (when applicable) or will send you a bill for any remaining balance.

Payment is due upon receipt of your statement after your commercial insurance payment is posted or you can contact the Business Office to set up a payment plan.

If I don’t have insurance, how will you bill me?

If you are not covered by commercial/private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, an initial statement will be sent to you after discharge. Payment and/or payment arrangements should be made prior to, or at the time of service. MPH financial counselors are available to answer questions you have about this process. They will work with you on other available programs and options and assist you in completing a financial assistance application, if needed.

Other hospital-related bills Depending on the service(s) you received, you may receive bills from other providers. MPH will bill you for hospital services, anesthesia services, and inpatient and outpatient services, if applicable.

You will receive a separate bill for the emergency room physician. The bill will come from Marlboro Emergency Physicians and you can contact them at 800-225-0953.

You will receive a separate bill from your personal physician for any inpatient services rendered.

P.A.S.I., Professional Account Services Inc., is an extension of our business office, and you may receive calls or statements from them. Please feel free to call the Business office if you have questions or concerns. We are here to help.

If you had certain medical tests or procedures you also may receive a separate bill for professional interpretation by a radiologist from Pin Point Radiology, or from Chesterfield-Marlboro Pathology for Pathology Services. You will need to contact your physician, Pin Point Radiology or Chesterfield-Marlboro Pathology directly to discuss charges billed directly to you.
