Safety Tips for Slips and Falls
While reading articles from Allied Barton Security e-mails and from my professional magazines, I thought that some refreshers might be in order for all of us with the winter season approaching. These are suggestions that might help reduce the number of slips and falls or near falls that could decrease our mobilization during the holidays and in periods of foul weather.
Several of the key causes for slips, trips and falls may seem to be common sense items that we are all aware of:
- Slipping off of steps. These could be entering the home, crossing the street or climbing into some of the larger SUV’s that many of us drive.
- Not holding on to handrails as we go up or down stairs or steps. As we grow wiser in years, I find that these aids are as much for use and decorations.
- Not paying attention. We have all seen the wet floor signs, and failed to heed the warning. Many of the public buildings have warning signs for uneven pavement as well.
- Not using a flashlight. How often have we left the car, and walked to the house without using any lights. I’m home, I know all of the items between the car port and the house. Didn’t know the dog dug a hole just before I arrived.
- This leads to the next cause, tripping over curbs, potholes and other obstructions either in the parking lot or on the street. Nothing like attending a holiday party and not being familiar with the contour of the lawn, to ruin a party outfit.
- With winter coming, water can turn to ice, wet shoes on waxed floors and foreign objects on floors contribute to many falls each year. These conditions occur in homes, malls and food service facilities.
- Sit in sturdy chairs and don’t become over comfortable. Leaning too far back often lands you on the floor.
Some of the simple things that we can all do to reduce our fall/slip hazards are first, Watch where you are walking, and exercise care given the conditions. Secondly, Wear shoes with appropriate soles. Next check sidewalks and drives and footpaths at home to insure that there are no hazards for your guest. Have adequate lighting at entrance ways, and along walks. Have and utilize handrails and other safety devices at stairs and steps. Pay attention to the warning signs any time that you see them. They are there for a reason. If you are decorating during the holidays, be sure that you use the appropriate ladder for the task you are doing. Don’t stand of the top of a short ladder to reach the highest point in the house. It’s asking for a fall.
Have a happy and safe holiday.
