New Happenings in the Women’s and Children’s Center at Marlboro Park Hospital

Marlboro Park Hospital will soon be installing a new fetal monitoring system. This system will allow us to view all the fetal monitors on patients around the clock 24 hours a day from one central monitoring station. In addition to the fetal monitoring system the hospital is installing a HUGS system. HUGS is a system that will help protect our infant and pediatric patients from abduction. This system has a numbered transmitted placed on the infant, using a special band. If this band is cut, damaged, altered, or tampered with, an alarm will sound. If the transmitter loses contact with the newborn skin, an alarm will sound. If a patient wearing a transmitted comes too close to a designated area, an alarm will sound. The system will be connected to a computer terminal that will not only create the audible alarm, but it will also show the exact location of the alarm and which particular transmitter created the alarm. These transmitters can also be used on pediatric patients, creating a safer environment for them as well.

“We have created a new program called “Tiny Toes”, states Cathy Musil, RNC, Director of the Women’s and Children’s Units. This begins in the doctors’ office with a free registration. Many educational opportunities come with this program. When a patient signs up, they are sent coupons and educational items. After delivery, there is a beautiful certificate that will be completed with all the delivery information and the newborn footprints will be placed on it. A second component to this program is a newborn web based nursery. Newborn photographs are something that every parent cherishes. Our babies will all be photographed with a personalized t-shirt. This picture can be posted onto the hospital web site and accessed by password that the parent(s) will be given. There are many photo packages that can also be purchased if the parent or family wishes. Our babies will be remembered on their 1st birthday with a special birthday card and party.

Other changes coming in the near future include child birth classes, smoking cessation classes, and even some updating of the Women’s and Children’s Unit. If you would like to see our units before you deliver or have any questions related to the Women’s and Children’s Unit at Marlboro Park Hospital feel free to call Cathy Musil at 843-454-8610.

We look forward to showing our “new” home to our patients and friends.
